What this drywall cost calculator covers
This drywall cost calculator estimates installed sheetrock cost for interior walls and ceilings from total square footage, sheet size, and how far you take the finish—hang only, hang plus tape and mud, or a textured final coat. It is built for remodel and new-drywall conversations where labor dominates the line item, not for specialty abatement or structural reframing.
Measuring total surface area
Add wall square feet and ceiling square feet into one number. For each wall, multiply width by height; for ceilings, length by width of the room. Subtract large openings only when your contractor quotes net area—many crews still charge full wall runs for cutting and finishing around windows. Closets, soffits, and tray ceilings increase area quickly; a 1,000 sq ft surface input is a modest whole-house patch-and-finish job, not a single room.
Sheet count and the 10% waste factor
Standard 4×8 sheets cover 32 sq ft; 4×12 sheets cover 48 sq ft and reduce seams on long walls but are harder to maneuver upstairs. The calculator rounds sheet count up after a 10% waste allowance for cuts, breakage, and offcuts—reasonable for rectangular rooms, tight for heavy archways or lots of niches. Moisture-resistant (green board) or fire-rated board is not priced separately here; expect a modest uplift on material.
Hang vs finish vs texture scopes
- Hang only: Boards screwed to studs or joists—useful when you are comparing framer-plus-hanger bids or DIY hang with pro finish later.
- Hang + tape + finish: The typical “ready to paint” scope—joint compound, sanding, and Level 4 narrative for most painted walls.
- Hang + finish + texture: Adds orange peel, knockdown, or similar spray texture common in tract homes and many ceilings.
Level 5 skim coats, Venetian plaster, and decorative finishes sit above the high band in many markets. Taping crews price butt joints, inside corners, and outside corners separately on complex layouts; the per-square-foot bands here assume typical residential productivity. Vaulted ceilings and scaffold rental can push a finish job from mid toward high even when square footage stays modest.
Reading the low–mid–high band
Rates are installed dollars per square foot of surface, scaled by your regional index. Low assumes straightforward access, standard 8-foot ceilings, and efficient crew size. Mid is the anchor for comparing two drywall bids. High captures extra sanding passes, vaulted ceilings, heavy corner bead, or occupied-home protection. Always reconcile mid cost per sheet installed with your sheet count when a contractor quotes per sheet instead of per foot.
Use the scope comparison table to see how finishing depth moves the total: moving from hang-only to full texture on 1,000 sq ft can more than double the installed line—often more impactful than switching between 4×8 and 4×12 sheets. Patch-and-blend repairs on older homes may price per opening rather than per foot; this tool is sized for new hang or full-room reskins.
What is not included
Framing changes, insulation, soundproofing clips, asbestos or lead protocols, wallpaper removal, and priming or painting are outside this drywall cost calculator. Demolition of old plaster or multi-layer tear-out can add labor before hang day. Permit needs are rare for drywall alone but appear on larger renovations.
Moisture-resistant board in wet zones, fire-rated Type X in garages, and soundproof double layers each add material and hang time. Oversized 4×12 sheets reduce joint count but need two-person lifts and may not fit tight stairwells—factor delivery and carrying when you choose sheet size in the widget.
